In Memoriam: Ann Bear

November 19, 2012

December 27, 1940 – November 17, 2012

“My work is the Jewish community.”    ~ Ann. L. Bear, Book of Life

The Jewish Community Federation and Endowment Fund mourns the passing of a much beloved community leader, Ann Bear.  A philanthropist and mentor, Ann was a symbol of valor, vision, and generosity – always leading by example, firm in her commitments, tenacious in her drive, and passionate about her causes.

Born in New York, Ann moved to the Bay Area from Tulsa Oklahoma in 1989.  Known for her eclectic fashion and superior baking skills, Ann opened her home to host events and before long, found herself serving on numerous boards and committees, including the JCF Board of Trustees, Leadership Development, and Women’s Philanthropy. She received the Judith Chapman Memorial Leadership Award in 2009.

Ann’s loyalty to Federation was unwavering; her greatest passion was women’s philanthropy.  “I have probably made an impact on an assortment of younger women. Without them the world would be a far worse place,” said Ann.

In honor of her visionary leadership, a special proclamation was made by Mayor Gavin Newsom, officially naming May 21, 2009, as “Ann Bear Day” in the city and county of San Francisco.

Married to Irwin Bear, z’l, an equally compassionate community leader, Ann’s legacy gift will help ensure that future generations have the opportunity to engage in the richness of Jewish life. We extend our deepest sympathies to Ann’s community of family and friends.

May her memory be a blessing for all time – Zichrona L’vracha.

Contributions are being accepted in Ann’s memory to the Ann Bear Women in Leadership Fund of the Jewish Community Federation and Endowment Fund.

In Memoriam: Annette Dobbs

March 21, 2012

I believe that my involvement locally and in Israel has made something special of my life. As I think back on the road I have traveled, I know one thing with certainty: I have received far more than I have given.” ~ Annette Dobbs, Book of Life

The Jewish Community Federation and Endowment Fund mourns the passing of our beloved community leader and generous benefactor Annette Dobbs.

As a first generation American-born Jew with a gift for influencing and inspiring people, Annette devoted more than 50 years of her life to volunteering and leading the Jewish Community Federation, Jewish organizations around the Bay Area and Israel. “Being able to help people we really needed to help,” Annette once said. “How do you turn that down?” Indeed, she never did.

Annette held numerous leadership roles from Women’s Division President to serving as President of the Federation from 1988-1990. Her deep sense of responsibility and commitment for the Jewish community were also evident in the work she did for the United Jewish Appeal, serving as a campaign consultant, board member, and National Vice chair.

Annette had a great love for Israel, traveling there more than 70 times since 1970. Those journeys gave her the opportunity to meet many of Israel’s pioneering leaders and led her to establish two kindergartens, as well as lasting partnerships through the Federation’s Israel and Overseas Committee and the Amuta (the Committee’s Israeli partners).

Annette was married for 53 years to local businessman, lawyer, politician, and equally dedicated philanthropist, Harold Dobbs, who passed away in 1994. Together they passed on their caring and commitment for our Jewish community to their five children: Stephen, Marilyn, Gregory, Rusty(z”l), and Cathy along with their grandchildren and great-grandchildren today.

May she rest in peace and may her memory be a blessing for all times.

In Memoriam: F. Warren Hellman

December 19, 2011

July 25, 1934 - December 18, 2011

The Jewish Community Federation and Endowment Fund mourns the loss of Warren Hellman, one of our community’s greatest leaders. His passion for philanthropy and dedication to improving life for San Franciscans and for the Jewish community locally and worldwide is a proud legacy and a virtuous model for civic engagement. Warren once said to his grandchildren, “There’s no such thing as being too philanthropic.” If everyone gave their time and resources like Warren did, the world would truly be a better place.

Warren was Chair of the Jewish Community Federation’s Endowment Fund and a member of the Executive Committee of the Board. His contributions to our organization were vast. He enriched our lives and our community beyond measure, helping Federation evolve for success in the 21st century, working tirelessly by our side, never shying away from a good challenge. The JCF is but one of many organizations and causes Warren touched so significantly.

As a dedicated student of the Torah, Warren was always finding inspiration and discovering life lessons, particularly in regards to how we treat others and use philanthropy to express our values. For Warren, the flaws and mistakes of the human condition were important to appreciate and to contrast with the tremendous potential for decency.

We will miss our leader, our mentor and our dear friend.

May he rest in peace, and his memory be a blessing for all time.

Honoring the life and legacy of Mildred R. Snitzer

December 12, 2011

Mildred R. Snitzer, a forceful presence in the Peninsula senior scene, passed away on September 9, 2011, at age 103. She attributed her longevity and vitality to her passion for dance, philanthropy, and Northern California, all of which provided opportunities for staying active and meeting new people. A professional dancer, she danced the foxtrot and taught country western line dancing at senior centers. Mildred’s generous legacy to the Jewish Community Endowment Fund will provide educational opportunities for Jewish students in the Bay Area for generations to come. Mildred shared her perspective on living and giving in the Federation’s Book of Life: “As highly as I recommend the Jewish Community Endowment Fund, I also suggest dancing. That is the secret to a long life. My motto is, “if you don’t keep movin’, they’ll plant ye!”

Federation mourns the loss of Richard N. Goldman, Z”L

November 30, 2010

Richard N. Goldman
April 16, 1920 – November 29, 2010

Richard N. Goldman

Richard N. Goldman

San Francisco, Israel, the Jewish community, planet Earth and all who seek to protect it mourn the passing of one of their most generous benefactors, a consummate catalyst and innovator who loved to take a creative idea and pursue it to its ultimate success.

Richard was proud of his Jewishness, passionate about Jewish affairs, Jewish studies, the State of Israel , the Federation and its Israel Center.   A former president and board member of the Federation and major donor for the past half-century, he believed in young people and invested in outreach to the next generation, encouraging them to appreciate being Jewish and to participate in their community.

Richard loved his native city of San Francisco and he dedicated himself to preserve its quality of life through civic and cultural projects.
Richard was an environmentalist before it was fashionable. The Goldman Environmental Prize put environmentalism on the world map and brought environmental awareness to the forefront of our collective conscience.

Goodbye, our own “Mr. Blue Eyes,” our mentor, our leader, our friend. May you rest in peace. Your memory shall be a blessing for all times.
