Love at the Latke Ball

February 15, 2013

by Chad Aronson

It was December 23, 2010, and I was getting ready to go to the Latke Ball with the two friends I had made since moving to San Francisco two months prior.  I was anxious to meet Jewish women, as I had not been finding much success on JDate.  I was disappointed when they both cancelled on me, and chose to spend the evening with my brother, the only family I had in San Francisco, instead.  However, in a twist of fate, another friend chose to go to the Latke Ball at the last minute! I quickly informed my brother, who then wished me luck on my quest to meet someone special.

Latke Ball 2010

When I arrived at the Latke Ball, I was blown away by the venue and excited about meeting so many new people.  After a few hours, my friend convinced me to accompany her to the bar next door where we could enjoy some free drinks since she knew the bartender.  Initially I went with her, as I was new to the city and didn’t know many other people, but ultimately returned to the Latke Ball to continue my night.

I danced with some new friends for a while, and later retreated to the (much quieter) upstairs bar for a cocktail.  By the time I reached the top of the stairs, I noticed two women sitting together at the bar. I figured I would walk by and see if they would look at me, or show any interest. I happened to catch one of the women looking at me as I did this, so I took the chance and introduced myself.

Within the first thirty seconds, I felt a real connection with Elana.  I can’t really explain why, maybe it was because I was six cocktails deep at the time, but there was something about her smile and the ease of the conversation that made me not want to stop talking with her.

Elana’s path to the Latke Ball that evening had also been complicated and, like me, she only decided to come at the last minute.  It truly felt like fate that we had met.  After dancing the night away, I remember kissing her goodbye and hoping that she had had as great a time as I did as I looked forward to our first date.

Two Years Later

As Latke Ball 2012 and our two year anniversary approached, I was ready to take the next step in my relationship with Elana.  I had already convinced her that we would be spending our anniversary at the Latke Ball, and Emily Whitehead-Coppola, YAD Development Assistant, and her team booked Ruby Skye’s VIP room for us where I surprised her with a proposal.  SHE SAID YES!

We popped some champagne, and she was so excited that she she wanted to call her friends and family right then.  I got her to hold off, and surprised her one more time- before she could even finish the first glass our loved ones appeared in the room to celebrate with us.

Thank you so much to Emily, the rest of the YAD staff, and everyone else who helped make this night possible.  I know I will look back at this night in forty years from now and remember how special the Latke Ball is both to me and Elana.

Latke Ball Breaks Records for Major Success

January 14, 2009

Young Adults Division - Challah Back!

Wow, what an incredible night! The 12th Annual Latke Ball was a rousing success. More than 1,000 party-goers braved the rain and filled Ruby Skye to the brim on Christmas Eve in the name of fun, friends, charity and Dreidel Dreidel cocktails.

Latke Ball

The evening began with a special VIP reception on the balcony, which featured delectable desserts by Eliot Collins Catering, Prairie Organic Vodka and Barefoot Bubbly champagne to get the party started. DJ Danman provided a sexy, loungy soundtrack and his live percussion took things to the next level. DJ Solomon took over at halftime and kept everyone grooving until the 2 a.m. finish when the dance floor was still packed and eventually Ruby Skye staff had to politely ask people to make their way towards the exit. That’s my definition of a victorious event!

lb-cocktailsWe are happy to report that we smashed all previous records for money raised at the Latke Ball. All proceeds will fund the entire year’s worth of programming for the Young Adults Division (YAD) of the Jewish Community Federation. This includes subsidizing the Club Fed seminar series, funding the educational speakers series and providing scholarships for UJC’s National Young Leadership Conference in New Orleans this March.

On the day we began planning the Latke Ball, my fearless co-chair, Nathaniel and I decided to designate a special beneficiary organization to receive a portion of the proceeds. This had never been done before, but we felt it was important to show the community that young adults care about causes that may not directly benefit us personally. We selected Camp Tawonga and we’re thrilled to be able to provide the Jewish camp scholarships for children. Even after this donation, our net profits beat the previous record by 23.5 percent.

lb-dj-danmanIt was not a Hanukkah miracle that the Latke Ball came together so well. A large debt of gratitude goes to the stellar host committee, which ran like a well-oiled machine reminiscent of the 49ers in Super Bowl XXIV. Everyone used their talents, energy and humor to make planning the event even more rewarding and the final outcome so successful. Tamara Wolfson, Nira Goren, Nicole Miller, Ryan Cohen, Erin Leonard, Aren Sandersen and Raphy Mahpour — you guys rock! I owe an enormous thank you to Andrea Skor, Co-Vice President of Community Building for YAD for all of her tireless efforts. I appreciate her unending enthusiasm and care for every event detail down to which shade of “Jewish blue” the napkins should be. More thanks go out to YAD staff members Stephanie Brown, Dina Jacobson and Abra Annes, who kept everything on track and made the night run as smoothly as possible. Also, thank you to YAD Board President Jordan Sills and to all of the YAD board members and everyone else who volunteered at the event.

Finally, a massive thank you to my partner-in-crime, Nathaniel, who kept the Excel spreadsheets rolling, the emails flowing, the to-do lists expanding and made working on the Latke Ball a total blast. Your goal from the very beginning was to ‘pimp the party’ and we can now say with confidence, mission accomplished!

Broaden Your Community with YAD

December 22, 2008

Young Adults Division - Challah Back!
The Young Adults Division (YAD) provides an excellent opportunity for young Jewish professionals throughout the Bay Area to network and make friends. It’s all about community coming together, one of YAD’s three main goals.

Hopefully you’ve enjoyed one of our many well-known, community building programs, including Blue Monday, Latke Ball and Summer Sizzle. These programs, which are organized by the Community Building team of the YAD Board, serve as the gateway to the Jewish community. For a number of people, their first contact with the young adult Jewish community happens at our events.

While Community Building programs are intended to be social in nature (and they are certainly lots of fun), they allow YAD to realize an even greater mission — philanthropy. In Judaism, we have an obligation to “heal the world” (tikkun olam). We can do this by performing good works, promoting peace and understanding and helping those less fortunate than us. By attending one of the Community Building events, you are helping us to raise money to pay for many of the important charitable causes that the San Francisco Jewish Community Federation sponsors. (In case you didn’t know, SFJCF uses its financial resources to help meet short- and long-term community needs in the Bay Area and globally. The list of sponsored causes is long and impressive.)

For instance, when you buy a ticket to attend the Latke Ball, the proceeds from your ticket provide funding for programs that care for those in need. That means you are helping to heal the world – one step at a time.

If you’ve ever attended one of our events, you will have seen first-hand what a robust, thriving Jewish community we enjoy in the Bay Area. If you haven’t attended one of our events, I encourage you to check out the YAD calendar to find upcoming programs.

Party 4 a Purpose at Latke Ball 2008

December 8, 2008

Young Adults Division - Challah Back!
Challah Back is off to a blazing start so it is an honor to be invited to write a post about our upcoming Latke Ball on Dec. 24 at Ruby Skye!

As we do every year about this time, Latke Ball 2008 is going to close down the year in style. With close to 1,000 partygoers annually, the event is no stranger to those active in the San Francisco Jewish community. Did you know, however, that about half of the attendees each year are at their first Federation-sponsored event? It’s true – from recent college grads to other young adults new to the Bay Area, hundreds of young Jewish adults discover Jewish SF at the Latke Ball.
group-shot

So, for the hundreds of people we’re meeting for the first time and the hundreds who’ve known us for years, what’s so special about this event?

First off, my co-chair Lex and I care about tikkun olam, and we wanted to include a good cause from the minute we began planning. This year a portion of the proceeds will go to Camp Tawonga, the Jewish summer camp near Yosemite National Park. Specifically, we will fund scholarships for children to attend the camp in 2009. We’re excited to be able to support kids in need and know everyone will rally around the cause!
ice-luge1
Secondly, as the event supports all the great programming of YAD – from Blue Monday happy hours to educational series and tzedakah – we wanted to pimp the party so everyone has something to get excited about. This year we have enhanced the event with VIP table packages and an exclusive cocktail and dessert party. VIPs will enjoy hosted champagne from Barefoot Bubbly and premium organic (and kosher) Prairie Vodka. As a way of thanking our highest level of donors, Ben Gurion Society members will have entry to the VIP party included with their general admission tickets. Don’t miss out on the fun – get your VIP tickets now!

Finally, there will be all the great music and good times you expect from Latke Ball. DJ Solomon is back for the fourth year running to spin your favorite jams. Before him, DJ Danman will get the party going with a selection of beats he has literally traveled the world to assemble. Once again, Ruby Skye is the beautiful venue for the event. To top it off, rumor has it that the legendary luge ice sculpture will make another appearance.

It has been a pleasure to work with the team to put this event together. A special thank you to Stephanie Brown, Lex Kershner, Andrea Skor, Jordan Sills and the Latke Ball team: Tamara Wolfson, Nira Goren, Nicole Miller,

Ryan Cohen, Erin Leonard, Jennifer Goldstein and Aren Sandersen. Ron Shmargad at AMS Printing has also done some timely miracle-work by printing our beautiful postcards for the event.

I speak for all of us when I say leave the Netflix at home and bring your swag to Ruby Skye on Dec. 24!
